ICSC Supports Tax Collection Changes for Online Retailers

Elliot Feuerstein

Based in San Diego, CA, Elliot Feuerstein has spent more than 40 years as a retail and construction executive and currently serves as an officer with the Mira Mesa Shopping Center. In addition, Elliot Feuerstein is a member of the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC).

Founded more than 60 years ago by seven retail professionals, ICSC has expanded into a global organization comprising more than 70,000 members. The council drives innovation in the retail real estate industry. It offers a combination of networking events and professional development opportunities. Furthermore, ICSC serves its members by influencing public policy.
ICSC has thrown its support behind the call for e-fairness, arguing that brick-and-mortar retailers and e-retailers should be subject to the same tax collection conventions. Currently, state governments do not collect sales tax from online retailers in a manner consistent with the way they collect sales tax from small business owners with physical stores.
ICSC projects that, as a result of the current sales tax policies, states will miss out on $260 billion by 2025. To remedy the situation, ICSC is supporting two pieces of recently introduced legislation: the Remote Transactions Parity Act and the Marketplace Fairness Act. Moreover, the council is encouraging its members to get in touch with their Congressional representatives and express support.
